Whenever we make a choice it affects all our other choices. One choice can change everything. Our choices shows whether we are doing right or wrong. That is what James is trying to say. One thing can change everything and it could be in both a good way or bad way. It is up to us to choose.  This really makes us want to think about making the right choices because our life depends on this. For example you can be out with friends. Out of nowhere they ask whether you want to try some drug. It will make a difference to your life whether you do right or wrong. If you do what is right you will say no and you will help yourself because you won't do drugs. If you do wrong you will try it and can ruin your life because you could get addicted. So all our choices matter and make differences.
